Do I need a Birth Plan?
Thinking about giving birth probably fills you with both excitement and trepidation! While you can’t know for certain what will happen, writing a birth plan could help give you a greater chance of having the birth experience you want.
Some definite plus points are:
• Encouraging you to think about what you want for your labour and birth and the options available. i.e pain relief preferences and labour positions
• Putting your birth partner in the picture so he or she can help or speak up for you during the labour and birth.
• Giving you the confidence that your team know why you want or don’t want something, as well as what you do or don’t want, which will help you relax and labour better.
Remember birth plans aren’t set in stone. You can still express different preferences as labour progresses – and your midwife or obstetrician will be with you to advise along the way.
